Just landed in John F. Kennedy Airport and heading north to the borough? The trip from JFK to the Bronx covers about 20-25 miles, but like most things in New York, the mileage doesn’t tell you much about actual travel time.
The distance sits between 20-25 miles depending on your exact destination. Most rides take 45-75 minutes following the Van Wyck Expressway north and crossing the Whitestone Bridge. During weekday rush hour (4-8 PM especially), you’re looking at closer to 90 minutes. Early mornings and late evenings usually move faster.
The route crosses the Whitestone Bridge, which means there’s a toll involved, worth knowing when you’re comparing your options.

The AirTrain connects to the subway, but you’ll need at least two transfers with all your luggage. Carrying bags up and down subway stairs isn’t fun for most people.
Some companies run shared shuttle vans between JFK and different parts of the Bronx, but they often make several stops along the way. Delays are common when waiting for other passengers, and departure times are limited. This option may work for solo travelers on a budget but not for those with tight schedules or large groups.
